Web Based Operating System The Furture Of Computing

Just think about it - Google’s already developed an internet drive, online document editors, advertising campaign managers, calandars, online WYSIWYG editors, an instant messaging client, and so much more. The recent aquisition of millions, if not billions of IPv6 IP’s, the dark fiber they’ve been purchasing, and the official statement, “we’re not going to provide internet connectivity.” hhmm - well what the hell do you plan on doing? My guess, “Google operating system.” I’ve also read or been told that Google plans on being within three hops of every home in the US by the end of 2010. The only explanation I can think of as to why a company is so concerned about network latency is an online operating system, much like YouOS.com. If you haven’t already, create an account - it’s amazing. There’s an entire operating system with a start menu, in your browser window.

Now imagine downloading a utility from Google that places base files on a small partition, sets that small partition as the master boot record, makes the remainder of your hard drive free space, and - it’ll even remove windows :) Ok, so our utility is installed, we’re restarting and booting to our new MBR. Once the base files are loaded, you’ll login to Google and your new internet based operating system will appear. Because it’s online based, this could make gaming difficult, right? Wrong.. We’ll still have hard drives to store local data - and the base system that you’ll initially download will provide the hardware support necessary to run your games and/or other applications.

This is all theory, but it could happen, and probably will. Google’s harvesting and collecting as much data as possible - and I can’t think of a better way to collect data than through the operating system itself, can you? As it is, Google knows what you search for, when you searched for it, how often your search for it, but chances are they don’t know why you searched for it. If they provided you with your operating system, your document editor, your calendar, search capabilities, email, etc.. etc.. they’ll know everything. A web based operating system that puts your entire computer on the internet. Not my view of a good idea, but what’s probably going to happen. As broadband speed and availability increases, there’s no telling what could happen. If Vista is a bust, and Google releases their own operating system, I’ll go all out Debian :)

Google’s motto is “Don’t Be Evil” - but who the hell in history has obtained information, and then NOT used it for evil purposes? Even if the creators themselves aren’t evil, they’re not going to be around forever.
