thehills.mtv.com Hits Google Trends #1 Spot For Hours

Google has a fantastic little tool called Google Trends. Today I check my RSS feeds, and the #1 searched term was:

thehills.mtv.com

Why? Because people would load up google.com and search for thehills.mtv.com instead of just typing thehills.mtv.com into their browser’s address bar. Where’s the logic behind that? Why the added step of searching for a website you already know the URL to? The whole concept just doesn’t make sense.

As a result of working in the IT field I see a lot of stupid stuff, but typing a URL into the google query text box comes close to the #1 spot. Unless some Internet marketing guru was performing some sort of market research to knock their competition out of the SERPs, there’s really no reason for performing such a mundane action. But how many Internet marketing guru’s were researching thehills.mtv.com?

Another great search I’ve seen really baffled me. One of my supervisors loads up google and then searches for yahoo.com. WHY? Just type yahoo.com in the address bar, it will work, I promise!

Just thought I’d add, thehills.mtv.com is currently the #2 google trend at the time of writing, with wood tv 8 taking over #1.

What are some of the outrageous search terms you’ve observed people searching for?

I see this all the time as an IT guy. People could easily hit F6 to get to the address bar after the page loads. It saves so much time. Even though we should all slow down and smell the roses, there is no since in not getting to the roses in a hurry.

I see you are mystified by practices of half computer literate people who search in Google. I do the same thing for a simple reason - I am too lazy to type in the whole address with the http:// jazz. I know if I type the .com in Google it will come up.

Drucilla,

I understand what you’re saying, but not typing the http:// jazz in the address won’t prevent the page from showing up. You can just as easily type ebay.com in the address bar instead of http://www.ebay.com/. Thanks for commenting!

I have a friend (Cheese) who’s supervisor was showing them how to log in to a corporate website, and did just as you described… they typed www.insertsitehere.org IN the google search bar, rather than in the address bar. It makes no sense at all, it’s not even easier, and it’s a waste of time… DeDeDe.

I wonder if people just think Google IS the Internet? So weird…
