Google has a fantastic little tool called Google Trends. Today I check my RSS feeds, and the #1 searched term was:
thehills.mtv.com
Why? Because people would load up google.com and search for thehills.mtv.com instead of just typing thehills.mtv.com into their browser's address bar. Where's the logic behind that? Why the added step of searching for a website you already know the URL to? The whole concept just doesn't make sense.
As a result of working in the IT field I see a lot of stupid stuff, but typing a URL into the google query text box comes close to the #1 spot. Unless some Internet marketing guru was performing some sort of market research to knock their competition out of the SERPs, there's really no reason for performing such a mundane action. But how many Internet marketing guru's were researching thehills.mtv.com?
Another great search I've seen really baffled me. One of my supervisors loads up google and then searches for yahoo.com. WHY? Just type yahoo.com in the address bar, it will work, I promise!
Just thought I'd add, thehills.mtv.com is currently the #2 google trend at the time of writing, with wood tv 8 taking over #1.
What are some of the outrageous search terms you've observed people searching for?
