Google Says: “We’re not making gPhone.”

Google recently stated they’re working toward releasing a phone that will definitely give RIMS, Apple, and other smart phone manufacturers a run for their money. With the intention of perhaps starting a new era in mobile computing, Google wants to put your personal computer in your pocket. Although they’ve yet to give the phone a title such as gPhone or Google Phone, they have openly said they’re making the source code available to developers with the expectations of making their on-line applications fully functional within the phone.

Some phone manufacturers expected to utilize Google’s phone software, called “Android,” include:

  • Samsung
  • Motorola
  • LG

Unlike Google’s competitors, Google’s software will remain open source for techies to experiment with, or just hack to allow complete and total customization. Andy Rubin, the gentleman running the Android Project said, “We want there to be thousands of types of phones, not just a Google phone.” After dealing with Sidekicks and Blackberries, this is very refreshing. Not only will the creative software development community have the ability to build a variety of phone operating systems, cell phone manufacturing companies will have more time to focus on building, designing, and deploying better hardware, for better software. The whole process becomes an endless cycle of improvement.

So how does Google benefit from all this? More opportunities to display contextual advertisements. A phone powerful enough to bring Google Calendar, their RSS Reader, GMail, Analytics, Adsense, Checkout, and more, is sure to attract a large percentage of people, including myself. This enables Google to target an even larger market, increasing their continuously growing revenue. If Google made an open source wireless device the size of my current phone that has the ability to utilize 100% of Google’s web applications, but in exchange I’d have to see a few Adsense ads, count me in.
