Easily Block Unwanted Ads Without 3rd Party Software

Execute The Simple Process and Begin the Path to Enlightenment

Windows user’s have a fantastic little file simply named hosts. To prevent unwanted ads in your browser (Opera, IE, Firefox, or any others), simply open:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

with your favorite text editor (notepad, pspad, ultraedit, etc). Once your hosts file is open, paste the entire contents of:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt

into it. Save your changes and attempt to visit your favorite ad riddled site. The well known social news site digg motivated me to do this. Recently, the number of ads displayed on digg were becoming just obnoxious.

The Benefits of Using Your hosts File to Block Ads

  1. Pages load in less time, allowing you to see what’s important more quickly.
  2. Malware Prevention - a lot of ad companies attempt to exploit not so avid users by almost forcing them to install some sort of software package that will help your computer, when in reality, that helpful software package will do more harm than good.
  3. It’s a simply way to give ad companies the middle finger.
  4. Everyone, no matter where you look, is forced to see ads. TV, radio, city buses, billboards, they’re everywhere! The less advertisement I see, the happier I am.

Now that you’ve made this simply change, you can browse the interwebs in peace by avoiding ads hosted on over sixteen thousand (yes, 16,000) ad networks. Enjoy!
