Dell Diagnostic Beep Code Troubleshooting Chart

Posted 1530 days ago - Hardware

Those beeps your computer emits at startup, yea, they mean something. If you're having difficulty figuring out why your Dell desktop, tower, or mini tower won't boot, take a look at this chart. Dell also has a diagnostics utility and can provide excellent technical support, sometimes. The numbers and hyphens mean exactly what's listed. For example, the sequence 1-1-2 means beep, beep, beep-beep. Some issues are caused by owner carelessness, others require hardware replacement. If you're unsure, either Google further, or contact Dell Technical Support.

Dell Beep Code Meanings

1-1-2 Processor Register Failure
1-1-3 NVRam
1-1-4 ROM Bios checksum failure
1-2-1 Programmable Interval Timer
1-2-2 DMA Initialization Failure

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 and am getting a 3-2-3 code.

During the diagnostics, the display whites out and I get the alert beep and then the 3-2-3.

I don't know if this means that the video card / video RAM has gone bad, or if my system RAM is going bad.

I checked the Dell website and there is a user there with the same problem (in 2006) with no responses.

collapse Guy Patterson # @ 2009-07-16 06:33:03

Have you ran a memtest? Try downloading the "ultimate boot cd" and running a memtest. That should tell you if the RAM is bad or not..

I have a dell laptop that I can't seem to find the code that it is giving. It beeps 3 times fast a slight pause and then one more beep and that is it. I have actually tried booting it up and it not beep at all but all you hear is everything spinning up and running like it is going to boot but that is it. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My computor beeps 4 then 2
I am unable to boot, it will not spin the disc drive.
There is nothing on the screen.
What is the diagnosis?
How do I recover?

Hi,
I encountered the same diagnostic beeps. I resolved the problem by unplugging the power supply from the motherboard, then releasing the tensioners holding the ram and re-seating them, that is reinstalling them. I did not remove them from the sockets since i am unsure whether they are installed in a particular order/configuration (2Gig). (I was given the pc and run linux from a thumbdrive, ordinarily). Hope this helps.

collapse Kajimel Raisuddin # @ 2009-07-03 09:49:28 Subscribed Via Email

I have a DELL desktop. My computer does not boot up. The computer does not send any signals to the monitor. Monitor remains always black.

When I push Turn-ON button in the front face of the computer tower, it turns ON. Most all lights come up. Fan starts rotating normally. I hear the beep sounds for the first few seconds in the sequence: Beep, beep-beep-beep, beep-beep. Then beeping stops.

If I turn off and turn ON the computer again, everything including the beeping sequence is repeated except the speed of the fans gets very high.

If I get all cables out from the back of the computer and push the turn ON button for few seconds, put back all cables again and turn the computer ON, the fans again starts low, but gets higher sped at the subsequent trials.

Please help me giving me advice how I can resolve this boot-up problem.

Thanks a lot in advance.

collapse Colin # @ 2009-07-04 14:21:23

Hi Kajimel, if you know how to - unplug your PC and reseat the RAM modules, then try again.

Are you sure it's the PC and not the monitor? If you can - get hold of a spare monitor to test the PC, or test your monitor on another one!

The error signal you mention doesn't appear to be listed here, so these are just a few things you need to try to help make a proper diagnosis.

Colin.

Actually, the 1-3-2 beep code is listed:

1-3-1 - 2-4-4 Memory/RAM Not Properly Identified or Used

That is a range, not just 1-3-1 and 2-4-4.

Another list shows 1-3-2 to be "No memory installed" "No memory installed or faulty or improperly seated DIMM"

I have a Dell XPS M1730. The laptop will power on but will not POST (lights are on but nobody's home :D ...only lcd's, no monitor and no hard drive). The Fn test gave the beep error of 3-3-1 NVRAM power loss problem. I removed and verified the RAM was seated. I even tried to swap the RAM from a working (identical) laptop. Tried all RAM configurations possible. The same 3-3-1 beep pattern :( Any thoughts on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

collapse Nappers # @ 2009-07-30 11:55:39

Hi CJ, I have/had the same problem on my M1730 with the 3-3-1 code... leds light up, but the display remains black. It seemed to boot into linux, but the keyboard was mostly unresponsive (though numlock, capslock and scrolllock could be toggled and Ctrl-Alt-Delete worked). In addition to reseating the RAM, I have tried disassembling and reassembling my laptop (which had no effect). I also tried clearing the NVRAM and CMOS by removing the CMOS battery for about 30mins (while disassembling and reassembling the laptop again). Now I get a 4-1-1 code from the test and sometimes two short beeps if I just turn it on without holding the key.
I have sent an email to Dell, but have not had any reply yet. Have you managed to find a solution?

collapse CJ # @ 2009-07-30 18:00:37 Subscribed Via Email

It is the NVIDIA card. I replaced mine and it is fixed. I found it on EBAY for $175 (GREAT DEAL) . I had also posted on the Dell site and some "guru" said the motherboard was fried but what do they know. My video card is the 8700m GT. If you are looking to upgrade to a better video card, now is the time. I would suggest researching the "M1730 GPU upgrade". I ran across people going to the 8800M GTX but that is out of by budget. For others out there the 8700m GT is the same trash NVIDIA card that Dell is replacing in the M1530 xps (extended the warranty) because they are defective. The 8700 is the 8600 only overclocked. We are trying to get Dell to replace it. So cross fingers that Dell steps up! Oh another diagnostic is to press and hold the "D" button. If you get the LCD to light up (will change colors and eventually to a bunch of lines) it is the video card. Good luck!

PS search for RW331 when looking for the NVIDIA 8700M GT replacement if that is the card that came with your XPS :)

collapse Nappers # @ 2009-08-14 06:39:36

Well, I've finally got my laptop fixed. Someone from Dell responded to my email after about a week and asked me to run a few tests, which confirmed that it was the graphics card. It also turned out that while the 1 year warranty on my laptop had expired, the components of my laptop have a two year warranty here in Norway (a bit weird, but ok). So, I only had to pay the service fee of 349NOK for a technician to come and replace the graphics card.
Unfortunately, the day before the guy from Dell responded to my email I purchased a replacement card on eBay.co.uk, so now I have a spare one...

collapse Guy Patterson # @ 2009-08-14 07:01:41

Nappers,

Glad to hear you're laptop is back up and running. Google indicates 349 NOK is about 60 USD, so that seems reasonable. However, if the 1 year warranty was up, I probably would have attempted replacing the card myself :P

Hold on to the spare - might be a collectors item one day. Just teasing... Give it away? Just hooked my sister's PC up with some ram & a video card I had laying around. She was extremely grateful which in turn made me happy. Yay!

Peace be with you,

-Guy

collapse Nappers # @ 2009-08-14 07:14:51

Yeah, I was going to do it myself, but the guy from Dell said that if I did then it would void the parts warranty as that part was not "user serviceable". I figure I'll try to sell the spare video card as I doubt that the new one will die soon (fingers crossed) and it's specific to the XPS M1730 so it won't fit in another laptop.

I have a Dell Dimensions 8400 I had a problem with no sound from my Creative Sound Blaster Live card so I tried to re-seat it. Upon restart I had no video then one of the three 1-1-2,1-1-3, or 1-1-4. Then it sounds like the fan spools up really fast. I am definitely getting 2 long followed two or more short beeps. I just don't want my fan to burn out while listening for beeps.

collapse Lawrence Sarna # @ 2009-07-26 13:20:59

collapse loasdrums # @ 2009-07-27 07:37:44

After a little research I tried re-seating the RAM, graphics card and audio cards. This did fix the beep code and fan spooling up issue. I still had no audio however. I simply switch to the integrated sound card for now.

For a phoenix motherboard, that code means:

I have a Dimension 5100 that would constantly reboot itself. Thought it was the CPU overheating so I replaced the factory fan and added a second one.

Then all of the sudden the computer beeps at me 1-3-2, which is the memory being not recognized/not there. Also diagnostic lights 3 and 4 are on, which point in the same direction. I have used 3 different ram sticks, one that was in it and 2 brand new ones and tried them in each memory slot one by one with the same results.

I tried switching the CMOS battery to no avail.

I removed all internal cards and drives leaving only the onboard video, hard drive and memory in place.... yeah you guessed it, same problem.

I am thinking the motherboard is done for. Since the computer rebooted itself even in BIOS after random number of seconds or minutes.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. If I could give a penny for your thoughts I would.

Best Regards,

BS

I have a Dell XPS 630 and been having a problem with it since last week. When I turn it on it will not boot up and it beeps.

It's hard however to tell if it's making one beep and repeating or if its making 3 really fast beeps.

Called tech support and they said it sounded like a MoBo issue and sent a new one out to a tech to replace it. He came out today and installed the new MoBo and it's doing the same exact thing; beeps and all.

Just not sure how to diagnose what beep pattern I am getting.

For all of you with a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop:

I unplugged the computer from all the peripherals. Opened the case, dusted good, then reseated the memory, all power cords, and all the cables I could. When I reseated the memory and cables, I air dusted the contacts before replacing the memory or cord. It's been running fine for a few weeks now. What happens is that vibration from the fans, etc., can cause a microscopic gap between the contacts. I would also recommend pulling the processor and reseating it. If you aren't comfortable doing this, your local computer repair show should do it for a nominal fee.

collapse Howie # @ 2010-01-25 22:14:20

I fixed my 690 and glad to say that the memory has now been updated from 4gb of ram it's now 12GB's although on my windows 7 x64 system it's only using 4GB of the 12 installed??? Anyone have any ideas on this conundrum.
As for the 'beeping sequence of 1, 1, 2, 2' I managed to fix this by taking out all the Ram unplugging the cable and then installing one strip at a time, taking care to make sure that all the memory clips were set to close just in case it confused the system after this process being repeated it worked like a charm.

As for the loud fan this also happens sometimes if the chassis is not closed properly, just check to see if yours is snugly closed.

Mine starts off with 5 beeps, the hard drive, and the monitor do not start up.

It then proceeds to beep 2-2-1 ... which I also don't see in the list up there. Has anyone got any idea what this problem might be?

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 530 that seems to have died. It will not boot up at all. Cooling fans do not start...no beep codes. LED on back/outside of Power supply faintly blinks green..."faintly!" Power LED indicator on motherboard blinks Amber steadily and constantly. I have connected new Power supply...no change. I have disconnected CD drive and Hard Drive...still no change. Reseated RAM chips...no effect.
No capacitors seem to be "pop-corning" showing over-heating. Is it possible that the motherboard is simply "DEAD?" Does anyone have an opinion to help me? PLEASE HELP. I can't afford to buy a new computer just now.

My Dell computer won't boot up. It just throws out six beeps, pause, then six again, and again, and ... You get it. Some dell "expert" told me it was the keyboard module, and if a new keyboard didn't work, then to replace the motherboard. I did that, but it's still doing the same thing. Anyone know what's going on?

collapse Michael # @ 2010-06-11 19:24:57 Subscribed Via Email

If you change the motherboard you should not have the same problem as it is from the old motherboard. Maybe try a USB keyboard.

That's a problem with the memory. Try reseating the RAM, that should fix it. If not, you will probably have to replace the RAM.

I have a problem with my dell laptop Latitude E6400.
I've bought it 3 month ago and It works properly but just beeping all the time, at start up and while using.
I installed both wondows XP (SP3 x86) and 7 pro 32 bit (does it matter?)
How can I stop this annoying beep sound, please help me.

I have the same thing. New E6400 that started random beeping (too far apart to have a discernable pattern) that is maddening. Laptop boots, runs with no problems but beeps at least once a minute for the past 5 days. The only thing I did notice is that the HD light (upper left side of the keyboard) appears to be constantly spinning even when the laptop is in idle. Any suggestions? I disabled windoxs XP beep, beep manager & used regedit to disable so this must be a hardware beep.

Dimension 4700 won't boot. Gives the first 2 lights yellow and the other 2 are green. I hear 6 beeps, but can not at this moment distinguish sequence. Monitor will not come on, fan runs and slowly speeds up. I have had this happen earlier this summer and after the computer set for 3 days, it kicked on. Last night it blacked out during the night while in hibernate mode unless norton update or microsoft updater kicked in and rebotted the computer. I will have my sons listen to the beeps later today. All data is backed up on a seperate hard drive so I I am thankful.
Thank you for help!...m

Look inside case at the capacitors on the MB, see if any are swollen or even burst, and leaking.. Possible also a short in one of the USB ports, bent pin etc.?
Try to get some old KB and mouse OR adaptors to use the mini DIN plugs for Mouse / KB. Won't need USB for those then.

collapse narseman # @ 2011-03-07 17:42:21 Subscribed Via Email

Dave did you get answer? I know this was a while ago now, but if you ignore error should still boot up.
What happened is the BIOS got reset to default, which includes to find the diskette drive on boot.
To make it go away. Go into BIOS and find and disable Diskette SEEK. This is seperate from listing of devices or drives. Since you have no diskette drive, it will always fail. Hope I helped.

1-3-2 beep code. I was getting this on my computer. I replaced with other units and within 3 weeks I had 4 units in the same condition. After talking to my daughter in law, an ex geek squad member, she had me remove all cards I had added , disconnect all wires to the back of the machine(modem, monitor, printer, etc) and remove all memory modules and boot. The lights on the front of the machine were different and the machine was not beeping. So, I reconnected the monitor and rebooted. I got a diagnostic screen telling me the memory was an issue (of course it was I had taken it all out.) I put in one memory card and booted. I got a mesage that the memory found was different than the config. I ran all the suggested diags and everything came up clean. I put in the other memory module and rebooted. Again, since the machine had adjusted to only one memory module, I got the memory did not match config message. I then plugged in all the devices and replaced the cards I had removed and everything came up OK. I had not found an answer to this issue anywhere on the the internet, so I hope this helps someone else.

collapse Dell Desktop # @ 2011-01-10 14:54:57

In the case of your computer constantly beeping, you should really consider purchasing a new desktop. Of course go to tech support, but if they can't figure it out, it's not worth spending all the trouble trying to solve a problem in which you have no previous training.

If you get the 1-1-2-2 (some say 2-2-2 or 2-2-1-1) Its bad RAM had the same problem yet again (see above) on the last 670 I still use (I still had 2 extra Ram sticks put in and worked and moved around with the old (sticks that were in machine at failure) and only one again was bad). Always seems to happen on a vpn connection and a total system freeze that you have to unplug the system.

I had to do a hard shut down, reboot and got various messages in dos, one being "hard disk failure"(gulp) .I powered down rebooted 3 or 4 times got a message again that read "item can not be found"

rebooted again, New message read #1 insert reboot disc. #2 try again by clicking enter. Finally everything stared up like it supposed to, but it took about an hour for it to load. After it loaded I powered it down the right way, and it booted up with no problem. So far so good but I am wondering what happened

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 530s. One day turning on the fan was really loud, nothing would show up on the monitor, and there were no beeps. I bought a cpu fan from ebay, that didn't work. I took everything out one by one to see if any of that would work, I was left with a motherboard, fan, and PSU. So I got a new motherboard, still nothing. I changed monitors and nothing. I used the monitor on another computer, and it works fine. The PSU fan is blowing, and is not loud so I didn't bother changing it. I did check it with a external power supply and I got nothing. I am at my end wits with it. I just need any positive information that will help me with my crisis. PLEASSSSSE!!

Thank you, Angie
